Session Description: Why do people challenge books in an age when there is ubiquitous access to books? How should frontline libraries respond to book challenges? Concepts and ideas relevant to responses to these questions will be addressed including definitions of key terms, reading practices and worldviews overtime, and how to respond to challenges and concerns about library materials.
Mirah J. Dow, BSE, MLS, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Doctor of Philosophy, Library and Information Management, degree program at Emporia State University, School of Library and Information Management. Dow is actively involved in research addressing human information behavior, teaching library instruction, and services in communities that increase and improve quality of life through information access, retrieval, evaluation and use. Dow is currently an ALA appointed advisor on the Libraries Transform Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities grant project, which offers more than $7 million to increase the accessibility of facilities, services, and programs. Advisors were selected for their experience with community engagement, disability services, and developing local programs for public audiences.
